International Jazz for Torrevieja
WEDNESDAY APRIL 13 should be great day for fans of traditional jazz in Torrevieja because appearing at the Municipal Theatre, is the Natural Gas Jazz Band, all the way from San Francisco, USA to the City of Salt.
The Natural Gas Jazz Band, has been delighting audiences for more than four decades and influenced by such San Francisco jazz legends as Lu Waters and Turk Murphy, ‘NGJB’ offers true, traditional jazz, stomps, blues, rags, marches, spirituals and dances of all tempos and moods. Today, the band is justifiably recognized as international ambassadors of their art. Not only has the sound of ‘Natural Gas’ been enjoyed from coast to coast throughout the United States, their travels have also taken them as far afield as Mexico and the Caribbean on ‘cruise ship gigs’ as well as performances in Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Scotland, England, Holland, Japan, Hong Kong and Australia.
For this year, 2011, the band have chosen to show off their talents throughout the Iberian Peninsula, offering concerts in Madrid and Barcelona as well as participating in prestigious jazz festivals in Tarragona and Terrasa, making on the way, a ‘whistle-stop’ visit to Torrevieja’s municipal theatre on Wednesday 13 April. The Concert starts at 20.00hrs and tickets are priced at a reasonable 5€.
Supporting them on the night is local jazz band, ‘All That Jazz.’ Founded in 2002, when local trombonist, John Hutchins, invited a group of musician friends to form a traditional jazz band here on the Costa Blanca, they are recognized as the principal jazz band of this part of Spain. Their music and style of presentation reflects the true traditions of a jazz style which began with the formation of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band back in 1917. Tickets available from the Municipal Box office or from two hours before the show but please order early to avoid disappointment.

The Natural Gas Jazz Band, from San Francisco, USA, has been delighting audiences since its formation more than 40 years ago! Influenced by such ‘local’ (San Francisco) jazz legends as Lu Waters and Turk Murphy, ‘NGJB’ offers true, traditional jazz, stomps, blues, rags, marches, spirituals and dances of all tempos and moods. Today, the band is justifiably recognized as international ambassadors of their art. Making history in 1989 during a ‘pre-glasnost’ tour of the former USSR, ‘ngjb’ were the first ever American jazz band to offer a ‘live’ performance in Siberia. France and Germany, including Munich’s popular ‘OKTOBERFEST’ joined the list of venues during 1997 whilst the band played at the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival during their 1998 tour of the ‘Emerald Isle’. The following year, 1999 saw the band entertain at the Shanghai international jazz festival in China whilst 2001 took the band members ‘down under’ to New Zealand and Tasmania. More recently, other prestigious venues throughout Europe (Dresden Festival, Germany, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Edinburgh Jazz & Blues festival, Great Britain, Switzerland, Italy) have also received these internationally recognized musicians.
For this year, 2011, the band have chosen to show off their talents throughout the Iberian Peninsula, offering concerts in Madrid and Barcelona as well as participating in prestigious jazz festivals in Tarragona and Terrasa, making on the way, a ‘whistle-stop’ visit to TORREVIEJA’s municipal theatre on WEDNESDAY 13th April.
