With just four weeks to go until Christmas, with the exception of the obligatory Christmas Dinner Party and visiting Santa with the kids, the cultural and entertainment scene leading up to the festive season is absolutely full of activities for you to pick and choose from.
Many of the events, including the St. Andrews Gala on Saturday and Wednesday’s International Gala offer free entry, so there are few excuses for you not to get out of the house and enjoy yourself. In fact, there has been so much on offer over the past couple of weeks it’s no wonder that some resident’s, here to enjoy their retirement, often wonder how they would fit all these activities into their schedule if they had a job to go to! Last weekend we had the 27th edition of the This Is Spain Show and at the IFA in Alicante no less than five exhibitions with included Bridal, Arts and Crafts and costumes and services for Fairs, Fiestas and Celebrations plus items made in the Alicante province not to mention nightly entertainment and sports.
This trend of non-stop activities continues and the last weekend of November is no exception with a wide variety of shows and culture taking us into December and the Patronal Fiestas.
On Friday 26 November we have the traditional monthly Classic Car event outside Ole del Mar in the Torrevieja’s Marina Salinas with a display of classic and interesting cars on show from 2000 to around 2130-hrs. A chance to show off your own motor, chat with other owners and for visitors to look at some interesting cars. That leads nicely into two events that are happening at the IFA in Alicante, the Sprint Tuning Car show and ExpoCar, the largest collection of pre-owned cars for sale, under the one roof. On Sunday morning, a contingent from Noche del Coche will be showing their faces in daylight hours and visiting these car shows. They are meeting in the McDonalds car park, beside Burger King, at 9.30 for a 9.45 start, to drive to the show in convoy (
www.NocheDelCoche.com). The Sprint Tuning Show is more for the young at heart offering a display of beautifully turned out cars, sporting Lamborghini doors, customised paint jobs, neon, LED Lights and almost every conceivable ICE (In Car Entertainment) system that your heart desired, from LCD TV’s to the audio systems that at half volume, would do your hearing absolutely no good at all!
On the cultural front, we have a Celtic theme at the Virgen Del Carmen Cultural Centre at 2000-hrs on Saturday where there is the third annual St. Andrew’s Gala, a night of humour, song and music featuring Shani, Greentown, The Rascals plus traditional pipes and drums from Spain and Scotland. Tartan is not obligatory but adds to the atmosphere. For those looking for a bit more glamour on a Saturday night, over at the Municipal Theatre, also at 2000-hrs will be the presentation and crowning of Torrevieja’s Salt Queen. Before the show, starting at 1930 you can enjoy a ‘Taste of Scotland’ for a small donation to AFA, Otherwise admission is free with tickets available at the door or from the Municipal Box Office. If there are any left, it will also be an opportunity to pick up a Fiesta Calendar, sponsored by Alamo International, which makes a fabulous Christmas Present.
On Sunday morning November 28, if you fancy a quick romp around Torrevieja, this is the day to do it. Just head down to the annual Patronal running race that is held at 9.30 but you need to be there up to an hour before, in the Plaza de la Constitución to apply for a number, or call 96 595 32 16 for more information. For those with kids that they wish to keep occupied, on Sunday morning at11.00 in the Park of Nations there is a performance called ‘TV Show 2010’ and your guess is as good as mine what that is all about. That’s followed at noon in the Municipal Theatre by a free concert by the Union Musical Torrevejense as a homage to Miguel Hernandez. If the kids still have some energy left, at 1700-hrs in the Marquee in the Port Area, there is a musical theatre entitled ‘Willy Fog’ for just €3.00. Still looking for something to do on Sunday evening, don’t despair, there is plenty to choose from! At 1900-hrs you have three choices, Torrevieja Children and Youth Choirs in the Music Palace, a concert by Los Salerosos in the Municipal Theatre or the end of year Gala from the Ruth Kingsbury School of Dance in the Virgen del Carmen.
With November out of the way, the Patronal Fiestas kick off in the Fair Ground Marquee on Wednesday December 1 with ‘Everly Brothers’ (no relation to Don and Phil) and ‘Route 69’ guaranteed to have you rocking in the aisles and the best things about it, admission is free. There is a bar, although you will have to pay for your own drinks! Everyone is invited and there are seats and room for dancing.
On Thursday we start to enter the Festive spirit as the Giants and Big Heads roam the streets of Torrevieja starting from the main square at 1700-hrs. They are out and about again on Friday at 1730-hrs and then if you want some entertainment, you are again spoilt for choice. On Thursday evening you are also treated to a dance festival at 1700-hrs in the Marquee in the Port. Moving to Friday December 3, at the Orihuela Costa Resort, Richard Street, former lead singer for 22-years with the Temptations is performing but get in quick, as the show is almost a sell-out. Spanish singer and TV presenter Bertin Osborne is performing in Torrevieja’s Fair Ground at 22.30 and, in the words of Mony Python, ‘And now for something completely different’, Dramatic Licence are performing a David Witney comedy play, ‘Funny, Ha, Ha’ at the Virgen del Carmen at 19.30-hrs; an early start to allow you time to get to one of the other shows!
The Patronal Fiestas have lots of other artists and offerings through the week. More information is available in the Cultural Guide while tickets can be booked at the Municipal Box Office outside the Theatre. The run up to Christmas also includes performances by The Rascals, the annual Christmas Carol Service, street entertainment, concerts, dance and exhibitions.
