Do you listen to the Carol Service traditionally broadcast live on Christmas Eve from King's College, Cambridge? The original service wasn't held there but at Truro Cathedral, Cornwall, and Truro's world-famous choir is coming to sing in Torrevieja during August to perform programmes of beautiful choral music in the Church of the Immaculate Conception on the 24th at 22:00; in the Palacio de la Musica on the 25th at 20:30; and in the new Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the 26th at 20:30.)
The Choir of thirty professional singers includes eighteen boys and twelve men who sing at least seven services each week in the Cathedral. The Choir also broadcasts regularly and in the past year it has appeared on BBC 1 and 2 television as well as BBC Radio 3 and 4. In a recent 'Dessert Island Discs' programme, castaway Howard Goodall chose the Choir's recording of music by French composer Maurice Duruflé as his favourite disc.
The Choir has recorded a variety of CDs which have been received enthusiastically by critics across the UK and further afield. Classical music's most prestigious journal, 'Gramophone', has recently described Truro Cathedral Choir as "one of the best around" in its review of a new recording of music by Louis Vierne.
The Boy Choristers, who receive scholarships and bursaries, rehearse every morning at 8 o'clock for at least 45 minutes. Most afternoons they come straight from school to the Cathedral where they do their homework before the whole choir rehearses for 40 minutes before singing a service at 5.30 pm. The Choir sings two further services each Sunday during term time.
The Gentlemen of the Choir sing alto, tenor and bass. Seven of them are lay vicars who are based permanently in Cornwall, and five are choral scholars who sing with the renowned choir during their gap years before going to university. They hail from various parts of the UK and further a-field. All the men organise their lives, work, holidays and, indeed, their families, around the Choir's busy schedule of commitments.
Truro Cathedral Choir's tours in recent years have included singing in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Italy and the USA.
This will be the Choir’s first visit to Spain and Torrevieja is the only place where it will be singing. With music from the old to the new, these are events not to be missed.
