New attraction for the Sea and Salt Museum

New attraction for the Sea and Salt MuseumTorrevieja’s Sea and Salt Museum welcomed a new attraction this week in the shape of an antique Salt Boat, from the 1950’s. Torrevieja, famed for having two of the largest salt lakes in Europe, used these very boats half a century ago and the one on display has been painstaking restored over the last year by students in the local Carpentry workshop.

The boat has a completely flat bottom and paddle wheels to navigate the lakes. This method of transportation was worker powered and causes zero pollution and little disturbance on the surface of the salt lakes. The boat is painted in vivid red, green and blue/grey colours, mainly to make them easy to spot while out working on the lakes.

The vessel is the latest attraction to the ‘floating’ museum beside Marina Salinas in Torrevieja. ‘Pascual Flores’, the last of Torrevieja's ancient coastal shipping fleet, Coastguard vessel ‘Albatross II’, and the jewel in the crown of the museum, the Delfin S-61 submarine, given by the Spanish Ministry of Defence to the town of Torrevieja. Also on display are a Torpedo, Mine and other attractions. This ever growing attraction is open Wednesday through Sunday, morning only, during winter. It’s a perfect time to go as visitor numbers are lower than the summer months, the weather is great and it’s almost like having a personalised tour of the vessels.

Alinghi ready for 33rd America's Cup in Valencia in February 2010

Alinghi ready for 33rd America's Cup in Valencia in February 2010If you missed the last America’s Cup, make sure you visit this time.
After much discussion, court cases and lawyers fees, it seems that there is indeed a possibility that the America’s Cup may be coming to Valencia after all, in just four months time! In a letter written on November 10th, 2009 to New York Supreme Court Justice Kornreich following the unsuccessful discussions with the Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC), the America's Cup Defender, Société Nautique de Genève (SNG), has confirmed that it will conduct a Deed of Gift Match with GGYC in February 2010 in Valencia, which is the date and venue repeatedly requested by GGYC and previously ordered by the Court. SNG has also expressed its intention to publish the 33rd America's Cup Notice of Race with immediate effect.

While SNG confirms Valencia as the venue for the 33rd America's Cup in February 2010, the offer to GGYC of an Australian venue for the same date remains on the table until 13 November 2009 provided GGYC agrees to withdraw all legal actions.

Alinghi skipper, Brad Butterworth, who participated in the discussions in New York, expressed his disappointment at the outcome: “We went into the talks in good faith, ready to make concessions in order to guarantee the return of the Cup to the water for a February duel between two state of the art multihulls, but sadly once again BMW Oracle were in power grab mode. This time their priority was to delay the race because they are not ready. Originally they pushed for February when it was to their advantage; now they have to live with their choice of date. I think I speak for the community when I say we want the Cup sorted out as soon as possible on the water.”

Another mark of shame from the BMW team, but perhaps this will be the news that the Valencian Region has hoped for all along as, if it goes ahead, this will bring much needed tourist dollars to the region. If you missed the last America’s Cup, make sure you visit this time. It’s a fantastic spectacle and event, even if there are just the two boats fighting it out.

Frank Carson performing in Torrevieja

Frank Carson performing in TorreviejaBelieve it or not; the one and only, "It's the way I tell 'em!" Frank Carson turned 83 last week (November 6th).
Most entertainers have long since hung up their boots by this age but nothing seems able to stop Frank so the legendary comedian is on his way over to the Costa Blanca to perform in Torrevieja’s The Lounge Bar, on Thursday November 18th. Lounge Bar owner Tom O’Brian has been an innovator when it comes to bringing over UK talent to perform on our shores. And for the last couple of years, every November The Lounge Bar has featured a main line Northern Irish comedian either in the shape of Jimmy Cricket or Mr. Carson.

Carson became a popular performer on Irish television, before moving to England to work as a stand-up club comedian. He had success on the long running television music-hall revival show, ‘The Good Old Days’. He then went on to win the peak-viewing national favourite talent show ‘Opportunity Knocks’, presented by the veteran presenter Hughie Green, three times. In the early seventies his big break came when he was invited to join the team on ‘The Comedians’ alongside the likes of Charlie Williams, Bernard Manning, Mike Reid and Jim Bowen. The show consisted of 30 minutes of non-stop stand-up comedy from several comedians in each show. It became a hit in the United Kingdom and helped establish Carson's career. The Comedians led to similar shows, ‘Who Do You Do?’ and ‘The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club’ making Uncle Frank a regular on television during the seventies and eighties.

At 83 he still loves performing and while he’s able to do so, he shall continue. However, flying at his age can take it’s toil so book your tickets now and enjoy a great belly laugh with one of the classic comedians who influenced many that were to follow him.  For tickets or more information contact The Lounge Bar  on 966 922 134. "It's a cracker!"

President of the royal Spanish swimming federation visits Torr

President of the royal Spanish swimming federation visits TorreviejaTorrevieja has received yet another award, this time from Fernando Carpena, the President of the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation (Real Federación Española de Natación - RFEN). After visiting Torrevieja’s Municipal Swimming pool with the mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernandez Mateo, Sport’s Councillor, Daniel Plaza and Marco García, at the Palacio de los Deportes ‘Infanta Cristina’ he presented the mayor with the Certificate of Homologation of Sport Facilities certifying the pool for official swimming competitions such as racing, synchronous swimming and waterpolo.

Snr Carpena was impressed by recent improvements that bring the pool up to the standards required by the RFEN to support international and Olympic swimming and pool events. The mayor also noted that new facilities were also being discussed to further improve the facilities of the pool, in conjunction with the Sports city Development, and did not discount the possibility to also add a Diving Pool in the future.

Torrevieja’s pool is now of a standard to allow scholarships to be awarded in Swimming Technique and places the city as one of the premier swimming establishments within the Valencian Community and indeed Spain.

Friday evening, November 27th should be date that the ladies should be penning in their diaries, as AFA Torrevieja (Asociación Alzheimer de Familiares y Amigos de Torrevieja) is staging a night of entertainment and fashion at Real Club Nautico Torrevieja. It’s the second such fashion show displaying a range of clothing available from their charity shop, located close to the Inmaculada Church and PROP Office in the centre of town.

The evening’s entertainment begins at 1800-hrs and features some of the areas’ top performers including the one and only Ricky Valance, Shani, Raquel Pena Flamenco Group and Juan Angel. Tickets for the show are only 5 euros and available from their Charity Shop or the AFA Torrevieja Centre, beside the old RENFE Station.

A great night of entertainment is guaranteed for one and all. Ricky Valance has been back in the recording studio and bringing out a new album to coincide with his fifty years in show business, as ‘Tell Laura I Love Her’ reached number one in the UK Charts back in 1960, Shani has also been recording and working mostly on the Spanish language music circuit, as has Juan Angel, while the unstoppable Raquel Pena will be on a roll from her November 22nd show, in San Pedro del Pinatar.

An excellent night of fashion and entertainment and all for a good cause.
